Discontented Past

by Michelle Welch

“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
John 3:6 (NKJV)

How often do we blame the past as a reason for our present? Because of him or her, them or that, we didn’t or couldn’t, our lives are forever mapped out?  Dear friend, by doing so you discount the love and power of your Heavenly Father and His very plans for you. You make the events of your past an idol, giving them unintended power over you.

My life has been a series of life altering events, some my choice but many caused by the poor choices of others. There were times when it was easier just to let circumstances control my destiny.  To let events play out, knowing they were wrong, yet seemingly unable to change. It wasn’t until I put my life back into God’s Hands, until I came to understand that no one else could affect my life, that I was able to be free of my past.

In Max Lucado’s book, When God Whispers Your Name,  he wrote “..you cannot control the way your forefathers responded to God.  But you can control the way you respond to him.”  Did you hear that my sweet friend? It doesn’t matter what you didn’t learn from those who came before. It doesn’t matter that no one took you to church. It doesn’t matter that someone used God as a means of punishment. It doesn’t matter that you ran from God for your entire life. IT DOESN’T MATTER!

In Psalm 56:8 we are reminded that God has recorded all of your tears in His Book. He knows all of your hurts. He knows that you didn’t get to choose anything about where you were born, who your family is, what choices other people made that brought you to your knees. Give Him your past. Let Him control your future. Take His Hand and walk with Him into your today. Cease the blame game.  Take charge of your life. Honor God with your today, your tomorrow, your eternity. You can do it. I KNOW IT!

Dearest Adonai, Your children come before you, broken and bruised yet not defeated. Your Son, our Brother, Christ Jesus, came to earth to show us that Your love for us is more powerful than the plans of the enemy. Give us Your amazing strength, Your awesome power, Your eternal love, that we might change the course of our destiny. You let us start over each day. For that we are humbly grateful.  Give us the strength to make it through these coming holidays, filled with family and friends, some of whom are cruel and hurtful. Let the words of judgment slide off of us to become puddles for us to jump over. Lord let us remember that not everyone is against us. Let Your Holy Spirit open up our eyes to see the real meaning of the holidays. Let not our minds be clouded with our past. Send Your angels to minister to us, helping us move forward in confidence, free from the burdens of what we can’t or couldn’t control. Take away our tendency to blame. There is no one who controls our lives but You! Let us remember that, now and forever.  We love you our dearest Abba. In the name of Your most beloved Son, Christ Jesus, Amen
