Finding Rest In Spiritual Whitespace

by Rachel Latham

20140618_01It is very hard for me to be still.
I mean really still.

Not relaxing while watching TV, not sipping coffee while surfing the internet, but still.

I find being still both wonderful and terrifying at times, something I long for and then something I am not sure what to do with.

There are times when I get physically still, but my brain is racing with lists, dilemmas, to-do’s  and worries so much that it is hardly what I would consider restful.

But lately though, the idea is circling my mind, tugging at my heart. Rest. The desire to be still and to get to know what I really think about things.

Amazing things can happen when we get still. Listening. Prayer. Worship. Not the kind where we are mentally checking it off a list – yep, quiet time done, what’s next?  No, not that. The kind of quiet that is deep enough to face the hard things, listen for your heart’s answer and ponder the promises of God.

I don’t know what this will always look like in daily life. It is something I seek, the occasional quiet that brings me back to feeling grounded.

Recently I’ve had the privilege of reading Finding Spiritual Whitespace by Bonnie Gray. I am just a few chapters in and I can see that I am not alone in my thoughts. I’ll be blogging more through June on the ideas of rest and spiritual whitespace. I hope you’ll join me.
