“See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come,..”
Song of Solomon 2:11-13 (NIV)
Last weekend we took sweet baby Lyric to her first Easter egg hunt. Everywhere I looked, there was a profusion of color. As my gaze expanded past the eggs, I realized the whole earth was bursting with beautiful shades of red, yellow, green and blue. The flowers and plants provided a stunning framework for the bright hues of the eggs strewn across the emerald lawn
I love the earth in springtime. The bursting forth of new plants, the fluttering of new life, even the air itself is full of newness. It seems that everywhere I turn, the dull grays of winter are being washed away, replaced by an ever changing picture of beauty. I can’t wait to rush out to my garden each day to see what new blooms have appeared during the night.
I am of the opinion that our Father in Heaven knew exactly what He was doing when He planned the resurrection for the spring time. Just at the perfect moment, set in motion before time on earth ever began, our Savior stepped forth from the dark tomb to bring perfect Light into the world.
I can imagine Him standing in the doorway, perhaps one hand on the stone that had blocked His exit only moments before. He surveyed the valley laid out before Him, shadowed by the early blush of dawn. After three days of darkness and storms, when the ground itself heaved in anguish, first rays of golden sunlight began to shimmer across the droplets of dew hanging heavy on the ground.
I like to think that, for a few brief moments, He savored the solitude and beauty. Those first few awe inspiring moments when every color from His palette was displayed in a kaleidoscope of creation. As it had done every day since the earth was formed, the world was coming alive. But somehow today the pinks, golds, and blues of dawn were brighter, crisper and more perfect than ever before.
His first gift to us that Easter morning was one we sometimes don’t recognize. Before the first disciples saw His resurrected body, before Mary cried her first tear of pain, then joy, before He appeared to the multitudes, He brought Light back to what seemed to be a world gone dark. The sun came out as it had every morning before that, but this time the Son came out as well. All the shadows of sin and sorrow were erased, made clean in the Light of His mercy and grace.
Each morning, He again makes the sun rise in the sky. It’s light shows us the colors of the world around us. The silver tear drop from a child that needs hurt feelings soothed. The rose colored cheeks of a friend who needs someone to walk with her, encourage her, listen to her. The faded blue of aged eyes that just need a someone to read a few scriptures to them over tea and cookies.
He gives us the opportunity to see our surroundings as if new every day. Another chance to make right what didn’t go right yesterday. Another chance to pray the prayers we forgot to pray yesterday. Another chance to write that letter, read that book, ponder that scripture. Another chance to share His Light with the darkness of someone else’s life.
Dearest Father, Let me view the world through Your eyes. Let me give only those things that bring color into someone else’s life. Let me not ponder on the darkness or shadows but step out bravely into the light. Please give me wisdom to see that while my favorite colors are orange and purple, hers might be green and yellow or pink and blue. Remind me that my colors won’t look good on her and her colors won’t flatter me. Thank You for giving us Your Son to change our world from dark to light, to bring color into a dreary world. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen
